BEST - Better efficiency for Industrial Sewage treatment

Project BEST was approved for funding in the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme's second call in May 2017. The project was nominated already in a earlier stage as a Flagship Project for the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region's PA Nutri. BEST starts in September 2017 and lasts until 2020.

BEST tackles both eutrophication and risks of hazardous substances to the Baltic Sea through concrete demonstration and pilot investments, training and transferring best practises. The project aims at better control of industrial discharges by jointly developing sustainable cooperation and optimal treatment for industrial discharges with municipal authorities, water utilities and industrial companies and cut down the load of nutrients and hazardous substances to the Baltic Sea.

Furthermore, the project promotes the exchange of good practices. The project stresses the importance of transnational cooperation and supports wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the Baltic Sea region to further improve their performance and reach the HELCOM (Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission) standards in treated wastewaters (0,5 mg P/l). Pilot actions and investments implemented in the project will be applicable in all WWTPs to solve similar challenges focused in the project, thus benefitting the whole Baltic Sea region.

Partnership: The flagship involves 16 partners from Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Poland and Russian Federation. Lead partner is the City of Helsinki's Environment Services (before June 2017 the Environment Centre) from Finland.

Budget: c. EUR 3.6 million, of which BSR Programme co-financing c. EUR 2.9 million.
