Local actors as forerunners

16 March 2011, Tallinn

Baltic Sea Challenge organised together with the Cities for a Healthier Sea projectHelsinki Commission and PURE project an international seminar in Tallinn in March 2011. There were c. 100 participants from the cities and municipalities, water companies, ministeries and international financiers as well as city networks from seven Baltic Sea countries.

The event underlined the role of local actors in reaching concrete achievements in the Baltic Sea protection work. The event consisted of two parts, a training seminar for civil servants in municipalities parallel with an open lecture on advanced sewage treatment in the morning, and an afternoon event for participants also from organisations of cities and water utilities, ministries, financing institutions, media etc.

The event showcased local achievements in Finland, Germany, Latvia and Sweden for improving the state of the Baltic Sea. Local organisations were encouraged to launch their own voluntary actions for the Baltic Sea. Municipalities have an important role in implementing the national and international covenants and action plans - and they can also be exemplary for others.

Programme, presentations, press release etc. material can be found on the Cities for a Healthier Sea project website.
